Create a Professional CV
Your Curriculum Vitae is the most important tool to market your skills to potential employers. It will be your first introduction to a potential employer, therefore it is important to spend time when creating and/or updating your CV to portray a professional image. Constructing Your CV
Your CV creates the first impression a future employer has of you. Use it as a tool to market your skills by providing an overview of your experience and to illustrate what you can do for a potential employer. You are selling your services as a product and the CV is your sales brochure to sell yourself to potential employers.
Keep your target market in mind when writing your CV. Highlight your achievements and skills which are required in the aviation industry, e.g. you would not highlight your sales skills when you apply for an Aircraft Technician role. It is important to illustrate the benefits previous companies had from using your services. Highlight your accomplishments.
Your CV provides an overview of yourself and your career. It should not tell everything about you. It is a brief summary of what you have done and achieved in your career and implies what you will be able to do in future. It should be short and easy to read – approximately 2 pages and not more than 4 pages. Future employers will not read through long essay style CVs. It is a marketing tool and it needs to be direct and effective.
Contents of a CV
Name, address, telephone numbers, e-mail address etc.
The Professional Objective is also called the Career Goal. Provide a concise statement of what you want to do. This is the heading showing what services you have to offer and where you would like to go next. There are many examples on the internet. State your profession, your expertise and skills, your industry expertise and your strengths (why should you be the preferred candidate for the role).
Summarise your experience, areas of expertise, technical or professional skills, traits and distinctions. This is an opportunity to emphasise key information detailed in the body of the CV to make it visible at a first glance. It illustrates the reason why the future employer should hire you for the position you apply for. Use keywords matching your target market.
Education and Qualifications
Start at your first qualification (National Senior Certificate, Grade 12) and build the list up to your most recent. Remember to list any courses relevant to your profession. Always add dates and institution names where applicable.
List the company names, years employed, job titles, duties and responsibilities. It is also recommended to add your references in this section.
Important to do:
- Include your key selling points on the first page of your CV.
- The headlines and initial phrases in your CV should support your main message.
- Keep it short, simple and easy to read, understand and scan. It should read like an advertisement of your skills and services.
- Use standard paper and avoid fancy colours, styles and fonts.
- Focus on your professional career and on the position you are applying for.
- Spend time creating, reviewing and changing your CV. It is the most important and powerful tool for marketing your skills. Start with a first draft and review it several times.
- When reviewing your CV, pay attention to unnecessary repetition.
- A CV with spelling and grammar mistakes creates a lasting impression of laziness, unprofessionalism, carelessness, lack of education and lack of communication skills. This is not the first impressions you want to create about yourself in the mind of a potential employer. Spend a few extra minutes reviewing your CV for spelling and grammar mistakes, then have an independent, detail-minded person proofread it for errors you might have overseen.
- Avoid staring sentences with “I”. Rather start with word such as managed, maintained, operated, etc.
- Highlight accomplishments.
- Do not over emphasise your educational background. Sell your work experience and accomplishments.
- Do not exaggerate your experience.
- Do not use abbreviations and use technical jargon only if relevant to the position and all readers will understand it.
- Thorough background checks are done by most employers before they even invite you for an interview. Always tell the truth.
- There is no need to include personal information not supporting your career objective, e.g. religious or political affiliations, hobbies and interests etc.
- A picture of yourself is only relevant if you are applying for a cabin crew / flight attendant position.
- Remain professional. Avoid using jokes and humorous remarks.
